H&M launched World Recycle Week on Monday, encouraging us all to think of the planet when it comes to fashion. They make a good point – over a million tonnes of clothes are thrown away in the UK each year, and research has shown that women wear an item of clothing only seven times on average. It’s a big waste. But there are plenty of things you can do this World Recycle Week to do your bit for the environment – here’s five.
1. Go charity shopping.
Charity shops are a great place to find clothes that are a bit different from what everyone else is wearing. Vintage styles are very fashionable, and you’ll be giving old clothes a new leave of life.
2. Learn how to sew.
Don’t throw out your clothes – alter them. Altering a garment can give it a dramatically different look, and there are even some simple changes you can make without sewing.
3. Host a clothes swap party.
Clothes swap parties are a fun way of getting rid of clothing items you don’t want any more, and maybe finding something you really like. Invite some friends over, and don’t forget to recycle what doesn’t get picked up.
4. Sell your unwanted items.
If your clothes are still in good nick (or maybe you’ve never worn them!), you can always sell them online or at a car boot sale.
5. Bring your old clothes and textiles to any H&M store.
H&M will recycle them and give you a voucher for £5 off your next shop when you spend £25 or over. It’s a good deal for you, and for the planet.
At WT Skip Hire, we take recycling seriously. When you hire a skip from us, you can rest assured that we’ll recycle as much of your waste as possible. We recycle around 90% of the waste we collect from our skips. Call us on 01493 668118 to find out more.
