Norfolk County Council Household Hazardous Waste Days

Household Hazardous Waste handed into Norfolk County Council recycling centres

Waste is considered hazardous if it needs special disposal methods to prevent harm to humans or the environment. We can’t collect hazardous waste in our skips, because we don’t have the facilities to transport and dispose of it safely. Most recycling centres don’t accept hazardous waste except on special amnesty days. A series of these Household Hazardous Waste Days are taking place at Norfolk recycling centres over the next two months.


Household Hazardous Waste Dates


On the following dates you can dispose of certain types (see below for details) of hazardous waste for free at the listed Norfolk County Council recycling centres:


  • 6th, 7th, 8th September: 9am-5pm – Hempton
  • 14th and 15th September: 9am-5pm – Thetford 
  • 20th, 21st and 22nd September: 9am-5pm – Mayton Wood
  • 28th and 29th September: 9am-5pm – Dereham
  • 5th and 6th October: 9am-4pm – Caister
  • 11th, 12th and 13th October: 9am-4pm – Ketteringham 
  • 19th and 20th October: 9am-4pm – King's Lynn


Items Accepted on Household Hazardous Waste Days


These are the hazardous items that are being accepted at no charge on the household hazardous waste days:


  • Aerosol cans 
  • Anti-freeze
  • Brake Fluid
  • Bleach
  • Carpet cleaner
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Furniture polish
  • Garden pesticides and fertilizers
  • Paint 
  • Photographic chemicals
  • Wood stains and varnishes


Items that Won’t Be Accepted


Not all types of hazardous waste are accepted on household hazardous waste days. You will have to find alternative means of disposing of the following:


  • Asbestos
  • Explosives and Ammunition
  • Gas bottles
  • Glue
  • Heating oil
  • Medicines and Medical Equipment
  • Oil tanks
  • Used cat litter
