Over the years we have seen just about everything with our skips. From the weird and wonderful items deposited within them, to the limits people will go to maximise every inch of the room available to them. Unfortunately, we sometimes have people who stretch those limits a little too far!
When it comes to hiring a skip, there is typically one golden rule – do not fill it any higher than the top of the skip. It seems a fairly simple rule, but you would be surprised at how many people fail to follow it; or the creative ways ideas people come up with to get around it.
Whilst some of these attempts may appear harmless, overfilling a skip can make it dangerous to transport. Below are three examples we have encountered:
Example 1: Your Typical Overfill
This is your typical overfill. Of the three examples we have picked out, this is probably not as bad as the other two. However, as the waste comes over the top of the skip we would still have to classify this as overfilled. In this instance, we had to add to impose an additional charge.
Example 2: Filling by Weight, Not Volume
This insulation may seem pretty harmless – after all, it does not weigh that much. Unfortunately for this customer, all of our skips are rented by their volume and not their weight and as a result this too is classified as overfilled.
Example 3: ‘Greedy Boards’
Of the three examples, this is by far the worst. It is a classic case of what we typically call ‘greedy boards’. As you can see, fencing panels have been inserted in an attempt to increase the height of the skip and create additional space. This makes the skip incredibly dangerous to transport and something we can’t allow.
Hopefully these three examples show why it is important that you order the correct sized skip from the outset. Doing so helps to avoid a surcharge, or worse still, make it impossible for us to take your skip away. We have skips ranging from small 2-yard mini skips, right through to our roll-on-roll-off containers for larger commercial projects.
If you are unsure about the right size skip for your next project, do not hesitate to get in touch – we will be happy to offer advice. You can call us on 01493 668118 or drop us an email to info@wtskiphire.co.uk.
