Throughout history, humankind has essentially had three approaches to waste management: burn it, bury it, and leave it where it is and move somewhere else. These approaches are obviously unsustainable in the modern age.
As technology improves, burning rubbish remains an option, but there is always the worry of pollution. Nobody wants an incinerator in their back garden. Norfolk County council abandoned their plans for a waste incinerator at King’s Lynn after a successful public protest.
Burying rubbish is increasingly problematic. The sheer quantities of the waste being produced beggar belief; with the UK generating a whopping 100 million tonnes of waste every year, that’s a lot of holes in the ground with a huge environmental impact.
We need to find an alternative solution. Recycling is the answer, and governments are keen that we all do more of it. The EU are introducing some pretty stringent rules regarding the recycling of domestic waste. The aim is to be recycling 50% of waste by 2020 and 70% by 2030.
Luckily, at WT Skip Hire, we are well ahead of the game. We already recycle 90% of the waste from our skips at our recycling centre. We can recycle:
- Wood
- Metals
- Textiles
- Glass
- Plastics
- Soil and Rubble
If you are concerned about the environmental impact of your waste, you needn’t be when you hire a skip from us. If you would like any more information about our waste management program, click here.
