For those of you who have green fingers and love the benefits of recycling then the Norfolk Master Composters might be the scheme for you. Norfolk County Council have teamed up with Garden Organic and have announced new training dates for people who are interested in joining it's successful scheme. The programme sees local residents volunteering to help drive down waste in communities across the county. The Norfolk Master Composters scheme began in November 2006 and has been a great success. It has trained 210 volunteers and has spent over 6,500 hours promoting home composting in the county. The aim of the programme is to raise awareness of the benefits home composting brings and to help reduce the amount of biodegradable waste that is sent to landfill. What do Master Composters do? Master Composters volunteer to promote composting in a variety of ways, this can include:
- Helping neighbours or friends
- Visiting local schools giving an educational lesson in composting
- Talking to people in the community
Toby Coke, Chairman of the County Council's Environment, Development and Transport committee, said: "Home composting makes real sense for householders. It's a fantastic way of recycling our kitchen and garden rubbish and turning it into a free product that does wonders for our flowers, fruit or veg, whether we're growing them on a balcony or in our gardens. He adds: Composting is also a vital way of tackling biodegradable waste at its source and diverting it from landfill. Everyone who does it is helping Norfolk implement its waste policies, which put recycling at the heart of our strategy." How Can I become a Master Composter? You must be over 18 to take part in becoming a Master Composter, so if you are 18 or over you can get involved with the free training by Garden Organic. The training is only two days long and you'll receive a useful information pack as well as visiting a composting site. Once you have completed the course you will be expected to spend 30 hours over the following year promoting home composting as a volunteer. Becoming a Master Composter is a great opportunity to meet new people and spread the word on how valuable home composting is. Speak to your local council for more information about the Master Composter programme The next training course is taking place on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th April 2015 at Holt Hall, North Norfolk.
