Skips are designed to house all kinds of waste, which has led to many strange discoveries in the past. From people’s ashes, to whole caravans – some skip hire companies have made some seriously strange finds in their skips. We have found some weird things in our skips but compared to the items found in skips in this blog they look normal.
- An Empty Coffin – This discovery baffled both the skip hire company and the police when it was found left in a skip in Norwich in 2007. Thankfully, on inspection the coffin was empty but its strange that the coffin was left in the skip especially because Old Palace Road is a busy street in the city.
- Unexploded WW2 Shell – This discovery was made by two skip drivers in Cornwall in 2006, which as you would expect raised some concerns. To make things worse, the skip was just metres from a petrol station. The Royal Navy’s bomb disposal team found the shell to still be live and dealt with the situation expertly, detonating the shell in a nearby quarry.Â
- Stolen Art – In 2011, modern art supposedly stolen from the Paris Museum of Modern Art were disposed of in a nearby skip. The thieves claimed they had destroyed and disposed of the art work in an attempt to escape. The five pieces of art work were estimated to be worth over £100 million collectively.
- Rare Vintage Motorbike – This discovery was made way back in the 60s when an administrative error at a storage lock-up resulted in it being dismantled in the skip. The bike was brought back to the owner’s home in 2007 and was being restored only for the owner to die before completion. Described by Bonhams as “one of the holy grails of the motorcycle worldâ€, the 1939 Vincent Rapide would fetch around $334,000 – $392,000 at auction now.
- A Caravan – Yes, believe it or not someone disposed of a whole caravan in a skip. The 1.3 tonne vehicle was placed on top of the skip in Newport back in 2015, with GD Environmental Services understandably refusing to collect the skip. As you would expect, the discovery left the skip driver speechless but due to the extreme weight the caravan added the skip could not be transported.Â

Overfilled Skips
While placing a caravan in a skip is a farfetched way to overfill a skip, overfilled skips are a real problem. Overfilling your skip will incur you with an additional fee as the load cannot be transported safely. For more guidance on not overfilling skips, read this blog.
