Towards the end of last year, we were involved in a fairly big project: the refurbishment of the old Spar shop on Kings Way, getting it ready for its new life as a Co-op. In this blog, we will be talking about how we helped throughout the project.
The Project
The project to turn the old Spar shop into the new Co-op started in September and was only completed in December. The four-month project involved a bottom-up refit of the whole building, including extensive work to the rear and side of the building. The subway sandwich shop that was once inside the shop was removed and as you can imagine, the work created lots of waste.
Our Part in The Work
Throughout the project, we supplied the skips to the site. We mainly provided our 8-yard skips, due to the lack of space in the building’s car park. The site of the new Co-operative store is an area with a high footfall, meaning we had to deliver and exchange the skips early in the morning to avoid as much contact with the public and traffic as possible.
We delivered the skips to the car park at the rear of the building, and we would like to thank the shops and businesses surrounding the site, who continued to operate despite all the disruption. Like many of the previous refurbishment jobs we have undertaken in the past, our staff worked hard and had to work fast. We were often required to book in skips last minute, to work with the plans of the industrious builders, but this was never a problem.
The Waste Created
Throughout the work, there was lots of waste created and many of our skips were filled to the brim. Like us, the Co-operative brand is very environmentally aware and we were able to recycle 90% of the waste we collected: choosing us reflected well on their environmental credentials. The shop was opened in December and we are very proud to have been able to help with its opening.
