Many of you will have a garage full of random leftover waste that has been left to gather dust. This can vary from pots of paint from the last time you decorated to containers of petrol. The majority of recycling centres will not accept waste of this kind and therefore knowing how to dispose of it has always been something of a puzzle. To help homeowners, Norfolk County Council will be hosting a number of Household Hazardous Waste Amnesty events during the month of September. The events are being held between 9am and 6pm at the council’s Main Recycling Centres, including:
- Ketteringham and Hempton on the weekend of the 5th and 6th of September
- Caister and Dereham on the weekend of the 12th and 13th of September
- Mayton Wood and Thetford on the weekend of the 19th and 20th September
- King’s Lynn on the weekend of the 26th and 27th September
What Can I Take To The Recycling Centre? Accepted Waste:
- Full or partially used cans of aerosols
- Fire extinguishers
- Domestic chemicals and cleansers such as carpet cleaner, bleach and furniture polish
- Water and solvent based paints
- Photographic chemicals
- Wood preservatives, treatments and varnishes
Unacceptable Waste:
- Explosives, fireworks, ammunition or flares
- Asbestos
- Commercial hazardous waste
- Full or partially full gas canisters
- Petrol
If you planning to dispose of your waste at one of the amnesty events, you are advised that products being disposed of should where possible be kept in their original containers, not mixed and clearly labelled. It is also recommended that you ensure all hazardous waste is securely sealed to avoid leakage during transportation.
