Local authorities are required to document in minute detail incidents of fly tipping, the actions that have been taken to clear them up and identify perpetrators and the fines that have been issued. Last year, we took a look at the statistics for Norwich and Great Yarmouth. The stats made for some shocking reading and we highlighted some of the figures in a blog about illegal waste disposal. A new set of statistics documenting fly-tipping in 2016/17 was released earlier this year. Unfortunately, things have gotten worse…
Norwich
The fine city of Norwich is sometimes heralded as one of the most desirable places to live in the country. Its plethora of parks means its residents are never far from a relaxing green vista even in the heart of the city. But the curse of fly-tipping has blighted even this idyll.
- Incidents: 5264
- Cost of clear-up: £272,586
- Incidents investigated: 992
- Cost of investigations: £32,736
- Fines recovered: £0
Great Yarmouth
A British coastal resort boasting a proud history and beautiful golden beaches, Great Yarmouth has been the base of our business for two generations. Being besmirched by selfish fly-tippers does nothing for the town’s reputation.Â
- Incidents: 7993
- Cost of clear-up £470,443
- Incidents investigated: 607
- Cost of investigations £20,031
- Fines recovered £655
Responsible Waste Disposal
We know that most of the residents of Norfolk are responsible about waste disposal, because we deal with them every day. A small number of repeat offenders are responsible for this carnage and they will continue to wreak havoc on our byways, beaches and green spaces unless the laws – fines of up to £50,000 and jail terms are sanctioned for serious offenders – are applied. These figures show that this is not happening.
If you would like to check these figures for yourself or look up the statistics for your own Local Authority, you can download a spreadsheet from the government Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs.
If you are within one of our zones and would like to dispose of some waste responsibly, please don’t hesitate to give us a call on 01493 668118 or email info@wtskiphire.co.uk.
