Finding somewhere to place your skip can sometimes be a difficult process. If you have a driveway or garage this is an ideal place for a skip but if you have more than 1 car in your home or live in a terraced house or flat you may have limited options. In some cases the only location where you can choose to place your skip is on the road outside your home, however, as this is the public highway and not a part of your property there are certain rules and laws that need to be followed. What is a skip licence? A skip licence is used for what you'd expect - licencing the skip that you hire. In particular a skip licence is the end result of an application process sent to your local council to allow you to place a skip on any public highway. If you know that your skip is going to be placed anywhere that is not a part of your property and is officially owned by the council and/or public, i.e. the road or pavement outside your home, then you must have a permit before the skip is delivered. How do I apply for one? Both the Norfolk and Suffolk county councils require that the skip hire company itself contacts them and applies for the permit. This means that if you wish to hire a skip and know that you are unable to place your skip within your property you do not need to worry about handling the process yourself. All that we ask of our customers is that they inform us beforehand, preferably while enquiring about our services, so that we can start the application process as soon as possible as there can be delays and waiting times of up to 5 days. Rules regarding skip placement on public highways Skips placed on public highways are subject to different conditions than those placed on private property due to the potential of causing damage or accidents. To ensure that skips are as safe as possible we must make sure that they follow these regulations, among other more technical guidelines:
- The ends of the skip that face traffic must be yellow.
- Each skip must be guarded by at least 4 traffic cones on the approach towards the skip.
- At night, lamps must be attached to the corners of the skips and between each cone and shall remain lit throughout the night.
Other rules that they must follow are in the same vein as every skip we provide, such as items that can be put in them, maximum size and duration of hire.
