An app with full UK coverage is providing a quick and easy way for citizens to report fly-tipped waste. And it’s growing in popularity – with over 2000 incidents reported since the app’s launch this summer, and 250 incidents logged in the last 7 days.
The App, ClearWaste, is the brainchild of Martin Montague. The Hampshire-based businessman funded the development of the app after becoming increasingly cross about the amount of fly tipped rubbish he saw. He told the Dorset Evening Echo:
“It came about because I was just absolutely sick to death of seeing fly-tipping everywhere. I really hate fly-tipping and the damage it does to our environment, not to mention the cost of cleaning it up… Eventually I got sick of waiting for someone else to come up with some way to try to fix the problem of fly-tipping, so I decided that someone needed to do something about it and that someone was going to have to be me.”
“There’s no need to go to a council website and find the right place to report it to or phone a helpline and sit waiting in a queue for your call to be answered. You don’t even need to know where you are as you can use your location settings on your phone to do that automatically if you want to. Hopefully given time the statistics will be able to help councils predict where fly-tippers operate.â€
App Features
The central feature of the app is the ability to upload images of fly-tipped rubbish taken on a smartphone. The app then reports the crime to the local council who will either clear up the mess or contact the owner of the property where the rubbish has been dumped.
The ClearWaste app also enables people who want to dispose of their waste responsibly to search a register of nearby licensed waste disposal companies. There’s even a feature enabling people to get together with others in their neighbourhood and organise a clean-up!
You can download the ClearWaste app from the App Store or Google Play.
Always make sure that the company who is disposing of your waste has a licence to do so. Ignorance is no excuse. If your waste is fly-tipped by a disreputable operator, you are still responsible and may get prosecuted.
At WT skips, we recycle more than 90% of the waste that we collect in our skips. Some of the remainder goes to landfill and we pay all the relevant gate fees and taxes. If you are within our catchment area and would like to dispose of some waste with a firm that will ensure that it is disposed of responsibly, please don’t hesitate to give us a call on 01493 668118 or email info@wtskiphire.co.uk
