The letsrecycle.com Awards for Excellence

Red carpet rolled out

Innovators from the worlds of waste disposal and recycling gathered in London last week for the letsrecycle.com Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management 2017. It was great to see our industry being celebrated and we’d like to congratulate the 12 award winners on their trophies.

Worthy Winners

The category that everyone was talking about this year was the Waste Transfer and Skip Business of the Year: Sponsored by Turmec. Congratulations to the winners, R Collard – a skip hire firm based in Reading. The nature of the skip hire business is one of small local businesses supplying infrastructure that helps keep communities clean and tidy. R Collard is a great example of that down in Reading.

Celebrity Spotting

Coronation Street, ITV studios won the Zero Waste Platinum award. TV’s longest running soap opera really stepped up its environmental performance when they moved studios in 2013. These are some of the steps they have taken that led to them getting the award:

  • Recycling wood from set builds
  • Banning disposable plastic cups from the studios
  • Exemplifying sustainable living on screen (e.g. Roy’s organic allotment)
  • Moving to digital film (stored on computers not kilometres of tape)

Other Notable Awards

The Recycling Business of the Year award went to Agrivert for the recent construction of large anaerobic digestion facilities. These facilities take animal and food waste and use micro organisms to break the waste down into useful products like biogas and biofertilizer. Anaerobic means ‘without air’ as the process takes place in sealed tanks without oxygen.

John Woodruff, one of the judges, said:

“The judging process was extremely difficult… all the entries demonstrated ambition, endeavour and an understanding of good resource management.”

If you are undertaking a project that is likely to generate a lot of waste, hiring a skip could be the most convenient and responsible way of disposing of it. For further information on our services, please call 01493 668118 or email info@wtskiphire.co.uk.
