For the millennia since we left the Savannah, humans have had three approaches to waste disposal: burn it, bury it or leave it where it is and move the tribe somewhere tidier. In these supposedly more civilised and responsible times, we do the same on an industrial scale. Waste is burnt in incinerators, waste is buried in landfill sites and, if some alien power were to open a wormhole to an empty habitable planet, plenty of humans would happily leave our polluted Earth behind and never look back. There is a fourth approach to dealing with waste: recycling – we need to do more of it, here’s how.
Recycling Collected from Home
Most councils arrange for some of your recyclable waste to be collected from your home. Precisely what can be collected varies somewhat. Here in Great Yarmouth, we can put glass bottles and jars in our mixed recycling bins – over the estuary in Lowestoft, this is forbidden. Your local council website will have a page detailing precisely what can be collected for recycling and the list is often longer than you might imagine.
Recycling Centres
East Anglia has a number of recycling centres where you can take items that can be recycled but that your council does not collect from your home. Things like tins of paint, old textiles and bulky electrical items can be recycled here.
Hiring a Skip
Over 90% of what we collect in our skips gets recycled. When skips are returned to us, we sort through the contents at our own waste management centre – separating out everything that is recyclable. Our set-up makes sure that none of the following goes to landfill:
- Wood
- Plastics
- Ferrous and non-ferrous metals
- Textiles
- Glass and plate glass
- Rubble and soil
- Card and paper
- Green waste
You can read about what we do with these on the waste management page of our website.
If you are concerned about what is going to happen to the waste generated by a project you are overseeing – hiring a skip is the most environmental solution to your problem. If you require any advice or information about skips or the process of skip hire – give us a call. Our number is 01493 668118 or you can email us at info@wtskiphire.co.uk.
