Knowing how and what to dispose of when dealing with confidential documents can be a predicament that could land you in trouble should you fail to dispose of it correctly. Under the Data Protection act of 1998 companies are ordered to deal with personal data in an appropriate way. Failure to comply with this can leave the company with fines up to £500,000 and even imprisonment for the director of the company should there be repeat breaches.
Should you Dispose of Confidential Documents in a Skip?
Most personal data and confidential documents can be disposed of in our skips, however they will need to be treated correctly before we can recycle them. If you have your own shredder, or know someone who owns one, then you should make sure all of your documents are shredded. Making sure the data is shredded correctly is vital, as otherwise you could be the target of fraud. Companies also offer shredding services, where they will dispose of your confidential data securely and then provide you with a certificate of destruction.
How can you dispose of confidential waste in skips?
As mentioned earlier, shredding is the most advisable method of destruction. However, there are other methods that you can do yourself at home. One method that is fairly popular when destroying paper and card documents, is turning them to pulp. This is essentially the start of the paper recycling process and is simple to do. You just have to place the documents under water until they are completely disfigured and are reminiscent of paper mache. Once dried the pulp will be suitable for one of our skips.
