Throwaway society: Waste and Recycling Facts

Plastic, paper and cans recycling bins.

Here at WT Skip Hire, we are extremely passionate about recycling waste. We make it our duty to recycle 90% of the waste we collect in our recycling plants. Although we do our bit when it comes to recycling, many others don’t. In 2015 alone, 297.5 million tons of plastic consumed across the globe. To get everyone thinking about recycling, we’ve compiled these 7 recycling facts. Well, really it’s now 8 facts because of the one in this introduction. Oh well, they all count.

1. The average family in the UK throw away 40kg of plastic per year, which could otherwise be recycled. The rate at which the human race is using and throwing away plastic is completely unsustainable for the environment. Plastic that is disposed of in one of our skips gets recycled.

2. Approximately 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are used every year across the world, that’s about 1 million every hour. Many plastic bags end up in the planet’s oceans and sea life often gets trapped in the bags.

3. If all the cans in the UK were recycled then we would need 14 million fewer dustbins. There are roughly 75 million dustbins in properties alone in the UK.

4. More than 28 billion glass bottles and jars end up in land fill every year which is the equivalent of the Empire State Building in New York filling up every 3 weeks for that year.

5. With all the paper wasted in the world per year we could make a 12-foot-high wall all the way from New York City to Los Angeles. A journey that is 2,762 miles long.

6. The Largest lake in Britain could be filled up with rubbish from the UK within only 8 months. The lake in question is Loch Neagh and is 392 square kilometres.

7. Here at WT Skip Hire we recycle 90% of all the waste we collect in our skips. Factoids like the ones listed above (and ones that are even worse) remind us of the importance of what we do.
